Claude Haiku 5.5 Puts Low-Cost AI Agents in Reach of More Routine Tasks

TL;DR: Anthropic says Claude Haiku 5.5 is faster and materially cheaper than the previous Haiku generation for many routine tasks.

The economics of AI agents change quickly when a model is used thousands of times a day. Anthropic’s October 7 Claude Haiku 5.5 release targets that reality, positioning a smaller, faster system for repetitive work such as classification, summaries, database queries and subagent tasks.

Anthropic says average running costs are around 75% lower than for Haiku 4.5 under its described workload assumptions. The company also added adjustable effort settings, giving developers another way to trade computation against task complexity. Its published benchmarks show notable improvements, although figures from a model provider should be tested against a customer’s own work.

For businesses, the use case is not necessarily replacing a more capable model on every job. A cheaper model could handle routine steps while more expensive systems are reserved for decisions requiring greater depth. That division can reduce the cost of long-running software agents substantially.

Model cost is only one component of a deployed service, however. Validation, retrieval, permissions, monitoring and the expense of correcting mistakes remain real. The release makes high-volume automation more accessible, but the strongest business cases will still be those with clear tasks and measurable outcomes.
