Visa’s Live Agent-Payment Pilot Makes Authorisation the Centre of AI Commerce

TL;DR: Visa, BILL and Billtrust have launched a controlled pilot that lets authenticated AI agents complete approved supplier payments.

An automated assistant can find an invoice and prepare a payment, but being allowed to complete the transaction is another matter. Visa’s October 20 pilot with BILL and Billtrust is designed to close that gap for selected business-to-business payments.

The companies say trusted AI agents can authenticate into supplier portals and complete previously approved invoice payments. The system uses tools from Visa Intelligent Commerce, including Trusted Agent Protocol, so suppliers retain oversight instead of accepting actions from unidentified software.

This may look like a small procedural change, yet it tackles a substantial barrier to agentic commerce. Business portals often rely on human login and confirmation steps because those steps represent authority and accountability. Automation becomes useful only when the same constraints can be transferred safely to software acting on someone’s behalf.

The pilot is not evidence that autonomous programmes can spend without limits, and it does not itself announce blockchain-based settlement. For the future of digital payments, however, it illustrates a common requirement whether money moves through cards, bank transfers or stablecoins: systems must distinguish an authorised agent executing a valid instruction from one merely capable of pressing the pay button.
